Shopify bundles: check stock, shipping, and fulfillment before a campaign

A practical test-order checklist for fixed Shopify bundles: component stock, prices, shipping, warehouse integration, and customer messages.

A bundle campaign needs an operational test order

A gift set looks ready on the product page. The photographs match, the price is approved, and the campaign link works. Before sending traffic to it, place an order that your warehouse can actually process. A bundle needs a consistent definition across the storefront, stock records, shipping, and the systems that receive the order.

This guide is a pre-campaign audit for fixed bundles and multipacks, with Shopify Bundles as the reference app. The checks below are implementation recommendations, using Shopify documentation verified on 5 September 2026. Third-party bundle apps can use different models; confirm their behavior with their provider.

Start with one commercially important set. Write down its component variants, required quantities, selling price, intended destinations, and packing promise. Add the names of the people responsible for merchandising and fulfillment. This small record gives everyone the same expected result when a test fails. Keep it beside the test order rather than scattered across chat messages.

Check the component stock and the packing promise

Shopify calculates bundle availability from component quantities and the number of each component required. Components without stock tracking, or with continued selling enabled, are excluded from this calculation. Review those settings before trusting the displayed number. See Shopify's bundle inventory guidance.

For an illustrative set containing two bottles and one pouch, 17 available bottles and 12 pouches support eight complete sets. Use your own variants and compare the calculation with the store. Then test the boundary: enough components for one set, followed by a component shortage. Carry out stock-changing checks with controlled test products or in an agreed test window so normal orders are not disrupted.

Write down whether the set must arrive in one parcel. Shopify's developer comparison lists no default fulfillment constraint for either fixed or customized bundles. A product grouping alone therefore does not establish your packing requirement. Pass that requirement explicitly to your fulfillment partner and verify it against a test order. See the bundle implementation comparison.

If your operation has several warehouses, choose a test where the components are spread across them. Ask the warehouse team which location will pack the order and what happens when an item is missing. Document the answer before advertising gift-ready delivery.

Assign an owner to bundle prices and discounts

In Shopify Bundles, changing a component price does not automatically update the bundle price. Product-specific or collection-specific discounts must include the parent bundle product; selecting only its components is insufficient. Both rules are documented in the Shopify Bundles guide.

Give bundle pricing its own review step whenever suppliers change prices or a catalog import runs. Record the approved bundle selling price, the component costs, and the campaign discount. Use the actual packaging and fulfillment costs in your margin calculation. The resulting margin is your internal commercial calculation, not a value this checklist claims Shopify calculates for you.

Test the offer without a code, with the campaign code, and with any automatic discount customers commonly receive. Save the cart and final order totals. Have merchandising approve the result in the currency used for the campaign. A correct product-page price alone does not complete that check.

For example, your team might intend a set to cost EUR 48 before an eligible 10% discount, producing EUR 43.20 before any separate shipping charges. Write this expected amount down first. If checkout differs, inspect the discount scope and combination settings before changing the base price. Keep tax-inclusive or tax-exclusive display consistent when comparing amounts.

Test shipping with a mixed basket

Bundle shipping uses the component shipping profiles. A set sold on one product page can therefore involve several shipping rules. Shopify also documents that rates from different profiles can combine at checkout. See bundle considerations and combined shipping rates.

Build a small test basket series: the bundle alone, the bundle plus a normal item, and two bundles together. Repeat it for your main domestic destination and one supported cross-border destination. Use representative addresses, record the available methods, and compare the final charge with the promise on your shipping page.

If a charge is unexpectedly high, list the profiles and origin locations involved before editing rates. Do not merge profiles merely to make one example cheaper. First check whether the distinction exists for heavy goods, a fulfillment provider, or a genuinely different service. Any revised configuration should pass the whole basket series again.

Shopify is gradually introducing shipping options by market, so the admin setup can differ between stores. Its market shipping documentation describes this as early access. Identify which setup your store uses and keep screenshots with the test record. Avoid copying instructions from a shop with a different shipping configuration.

Follow the order into the warehouse and back

Shopify's developer documentation describes order lines as components linked through bundle groupings, with returns and refunds operating at component level. Your ERP or warehouse connector needs to interpret that structure correctly. This is a reason to test the integration, not evidence that a particular connector is faulty. See how bundles are represented.

Ask the person packing the test order to compare the pick list with your bundle definition. For the bottle-and-pouch example, one purchased set must result in two bottles and one pouch being picked. Check quantities, variant identifiers, and the information needed to choose the right packaging. Save the connector's order reference alongside the Shopify order reference.

Next, walk through a partial return with your support team in a controlled test. Identify the component being returned, the expected refund amount, and whether the item should go back into sellable stock. Compare the resulting records in Shopify and the connected system. Do not invent a refund amount from the headline bundle discount; inspect the actual order allocation.

Include a failed handoff scenario in the provider discussion. Ask how staff notice an order that was not imported and how they retry it without creating a second warehouse order. Request the documented recovery procedure and a named contact. This remains useful even when the ordinary test order succeeds.

Verify customer messages and each intended channel

Older customized notifications deserve a separate check. Shopify says templates customized before 6 December 2024 did not automatically receive the grouped bundle display update. Back up customizations before changing them, using the notification update guidance.

Read the delivered order confirmation on a phone. Can the buyer recognize the set and its contents? Then inspect the shipping and return messages relevant to your test. Ask support to explain any wording that could suggest a missing item or an incorrect quantity. Preserve useful existing branding and service information when fixing the template.

Check sales channels individually. At the time of research, Shopify's bundle overview names several supported channels, while the app guide's limitations section gives narrower guidance. Treat that inconsistency as a reason to verify availability in your admin and with the app or channel provider. Do not assume a successful Online Store purchase proves that a marketplace listing or external product feed will work.

Release the offer with a short acceptance record

Keep a compact acceptance record that another team member can repeat:

  • Bundle definition and component quantities match the packed test order.
  • Stock boundary and warehouse allocation have been checked.
  • Base price, campaign discount, and shipping charge match approved expectations.
  • ERP import, partial return, and recovery responsibilities are documented.
  • Customer messages and every intended sales channel have been checked.

Assign an owner to each unresolved issue. Launch only the configurations you have verified, and repeat the relevant tests after changes to components, prices, shipping, or connectors. Review the first campaign orders with fulfillment and support so discrepancies reach the person who can fix them.

If the bundle works in Shopify but breaks between the store and your back office, Stormdev can help trace a sample order, check the mapping, and implement the specific integration fix your team needs.
